Why in the world are you bothering to plant seeds when you can get a 100+ year old Ponderosa next spring? I am not sure about you but I don't have that much time to look at growth from seeds.

Wyoming High Ledge Ponderosa - For Klytus

Where in the state of Wyoming was it collected. It's a fantastic tree and a good size. I collected 9 Ponderosas this year and when I got them home I realized how large they were. Trees in the wild always look smaller. Dave in Colorado.

Wyoming High Ledge Ponderosa - For Klytus

Sometimes the root mass of a tree dictates how it is placed in a pot. The majority of the 9 Ponderosas I collected this year I would have preferred a different placement in their pots but it just didn't suit the tree. DAve in Colorado:cool:

Do you pot or train first?

When you buy a potential tree do you re-pot first or leave it in the container and trim and wire it before going to a pot. Myself I move it to a pot to see if it will actually make the change and be healthy in a new pot and then a year later style it. Dave in Colorado:)

    Tools and what to get?

Tools? I bought all mine off of eBay. As long as you know what you are looking for eBay is great PLUS the prices are less than the "Bonsai Nursery's". Just my opinion. Dave in Colorful Colorado;)

To sift or not to sift....

It's a very good point you make about sifting and the result is a finer dust which I would think would clog drainage holes, compact and do more damage than good. No more sifting for me.:o

To sift or not to sift....

Sifting My collection is 90% conifers. I used 1/3 each of pea gravel, turface and fine mulch. I sift only the mulch to that I get the finest particles the rest is right from the bag. Dave in Colorado:D
