    Attempted murder of a Seiju

After reading a post from last spring showing how much progress someone got in one growing season with their Seiju in developing trunk movement, I decided to test the limits of mine. I decided to keep it a short tree as I don't like the knuckles with reverse taper they usually develop all along...

    First Uro attempt - Trident

I never liked the calloused scars at the base of this trident so got I overly optimistic and developed some misplaced confidence watching some Graham Potter videos and gave it a try. I'm not sure where to go from here with forming an apex after my trunk chop. Has anyone ever done a flat top...

    Tigerbark Ficus needs help

Ive had this large ficus for a few years. I've never really liked the form as it seemed more like a bush in a pot. I'm thinking about a banyon tree style similar to the small tiger bark of mine that I included the pictures of. Any thoughts, comments, critiques ?

    Thunderhead JBP experiment

Picked this up last year at the local nursery. I figured I'd play with something cheap before killing a large expensive pine. It seems to back bud really well. Trunk chopped it last year and put it in an oversized cascade pot earlier this year. My first attempt at trying a semi cascade as well...

Backdrop ideas requested for OKC bonsai show

We desperately need to improve the OKC bonsai show display. It has always been held in an old garden center facility with sterile white painted cement block walls. Curious as to how other clubs create backdrops or if they rent them? Of course the older members in our club are resistant to any...

    American or Cedar Elm

I collected several elms this spring from my Dad's property. Thought it would be cool to develop a few bonsai from the land I used to play on as a kid. I'm not sure if they are American or Cedar Elms. They were growing in a forested area under larger trees. Leaves feel somewhat rough and...

    Need bad bonsai pics

I'm giving a powerpoint presentation at our local club meeting this coming week on the Fundamentals of Bonsai. I need some pictures of trees that violate the rules (and thus are not aesthetically pleasing) for the presentation. Anyone have any images that they have saved over the years for...

    Misting system question

I'm setting up a misting system in my greenhouse frame that has a shade cloth instead of plastic in the summer. It will draw water with a pump and timer from a 40 gallon reservoir. My water is very hard and has a pH a little over 8. Any benefit in using vinegar to drop this to 7 in my reservoir...

    Making pedestal stands

Here is what 'Tonya1219' and I have so far. Do you recommend crossbraces within the 2x6 on the center stand and 2x4's on the smaller stands for more stability? Anyone use any brackets going from under the top 2x2 deck onto the posts? Thanks!

    Systemic pesticides

Any recs on one of these to use? The ones I've seen thus far also contain a fertilizer.

    OKC Show

Here is a link to pics from the OKC show. We really need to move this to a better location for better displays. We also need some more enthusiastic members to break the old molds of how things were done for years and years for improvements all around. Only a few members have really nice trees...

    Hinoki in the South?

Does anyone in zone 7 or warmer have a Hinoki? I have a club friend who really wants one though I'm skeptical how they would do here. Thanks!

    Display pedestal suggestions

I'm wanting to make pedestal display stands for my backyard. What size do you recommend the top to be? Planned on making them with decorative timbers, 1x1's on top, and 2x4 or 2x6's underneath for support. Any other ideas/recommendations Thanks!

    A few new trees

Here are a few pre bonsai stock (Sargents Juniper and Arakawa JM) and one potted Korean hornbeam pic I snapped while loading up the car leaving Rendezvous. I'll post some better pics of all of them tonight or tomorrow. I think that's the back side of the sargents though.

    First stab at bonsai bench

I may end up replacing the top 1x6 with a 10ft long board rather than the 8ft one on there now. I'm also not convinced I like the (only) subtle color differentiation between the bench and front facade but will see it better and decide tomorrow in the daylight. I'm open to suggestions. I even...

Pathology on this Landscape Peve Minaret BC?

Anyone know what this might be on a Peve Minaret Dwarf Bald Cypress in my yard? No bugs seen on the foliage. It's affecting one entire branch at a time which I've been removing. The rest of the tree looks great. Thanks

    Out of the closet

Finally changed username from bonsairxmd to Chad D Shohin to seed (since that's what matters...right?) So I'm ready to sow my seed. Be gentle. It's an adjustment period :)
