    Fall colors

I am finally getting around to actually posting something again. This is an elm I have had for a few years, and this past fall's colors were especially nice. The tree is actually close to leafing out now. It has big green buds probably just days away from being leaves. One thing that is...

    Azalea: what ailment is this?

As you can see from the first picture, the tree is not suffering terribly from this, but I want to stop it before it does. I have been noticing a few leaves per day like this. I have a feeling that this is a fairly common ailment, and I think I remember seeing this at BT, but I don't remember...

    Red A. Palm drastic pruning.

I have a non-grafted red variety (not sure specifically, but it is nothing rare or dissected) that I want to do some work on. It is in the ground, and I am planning to root prune next spring. I have read over at bonsai4me that a good time to do drastic pruning is mid-summer because sap flow is...

    Best cascade potting method

Obviously, a bonsai needs to be firm in its pot. I was wondering today about how this is achieved in a cascade pot, especially with younger material. I have an airlayer that will become a cascade, and obviously there will not be enough roots to fill the pot. Do any of you have a favorite...

    Brown azalea leaves.

Not only did I find my elm sickly this morning, but my azalea is also worrying me. I dug this over a week ago, retaining a good size root ball. I did not try to mess with the roots at all, and have not fertilized yet. I actually brought it to an azalea workshop yesterday, but nothing big was...

    Yellowing elm leaves.

This elm was repotted in early spring (late feb.) and has been healthily growing. I noticed some red mites a few days ago and sprayed with insecticidal soap. Haven't seen any bugs, but this morning I noticed some yellowing leaves. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Thanks. Nick.

Newly acquired A. Palmatum. Root work questions

I recently got this from a nursery owner who didn't have time to repot this year. consequently he discounted it. I was wondering if it was still safe to do some work on the roots, and if so, to what extent could I reduce them. It's obviously in poor soil, and will need something done to it...
