Generally speaking, we use thevegen numbered gauges here, not the odds. I don’t know why.

In Japan, their gauges are different than American gauges. Our 16 gauge is equivalent to their 18 gauge. (Or vice versa. I don’t know which). Go figure!

Its because the difference in size would be too minimal from a #12 to a #11 when it comes to the ampacity rating of wire. And we actually do use “some” odds but only #3 and #1 (and those are rarely used as it is but they do exist) in industrial/commercial electrical construction.

Didnt know that about Japanese sizing though, interesting!
 
I've seen a few trees here that could benefit from a 12 gauge pump.....
