In the spirit of trying something I am inexperienced in, here is maybe a Serbian Spruce which was unmarked in a big box for $12. The canopy was a lot bigger than the trunk would seem to be matched to, but it was an obvious congested growth/dwarf one of kind at the store and I felt the trunk with my fingers, couldn't detect a graft, so I bought it to make one as small as the trunk would require to be in-scale. The progression starts with a #1 1/2 (gal) pot which was shortened to work and stay in until a repot in the future after backbudding happens. I'm pretty confident in that because there was plenty of ground layering of lower branches and the trunk buried up to the bottom of the lower branches. The finished branches are long enough to have needles so I expect (hope) that all will bud out by next summer. The ultimate hoped for shape is outlined below. The trunk & branches are pretty skinny, so the final tree needs to be pretty small. We shall see.

Do you have an update? I would like to see what you are able to do with this even if it has been "disqualified".
