A couple of new one's from Don Blackmond, last one's for the year.

a bunch of insults being thrown around.
The closest thing to any insults was someone calling Adair arrogant.

And that was hardly an insult.

This thread never went bad IMO.

It brought about a bunch of creative ideas.

That's what we ALL are here for....

Well.....except the guy who just comes to see Vin's picture!:p

Sorry but I won't be participating in this thread any longer. I started it to share some pics of a few tree's that I had obtained and some how it just turned into a bunch of insults being thrown around. I think from now on when I want to share pics that's all I will be doing:) Post em up and walk away.......... I'm in it for the tree's and the photography, not the insults or the politics! If I make a friend here and there cool.

i can understand where you might think that - its difficult to detect tone over the internet (especially from people you dont know).

while i read more than i post on here, ive been around long enough (from the bonsai talk days even) to know that rockm and adair possess a wealth of knowledge and experience and its worth taking their comments into consideration. (along with other folks, but you seemed offended more by those two so i referred to them in particular).

from a fairly neutral third party - youd be wise to reconsider their comments and your attitude towards them. if either of them take the time to comment its because they are trying to help not hurt. for the most part, everyone here tries to help - its just some are a little more knowledgeable than others.

at the end of the day they are your trees and your responsibility and you should do what makes YOU happy. but i would encourage you to take your time and not be so hasty to brush folks off. nobody is perfect, anyone can have a bad day, and everyones experiences are different - but most arent out to get you.

now ill admit there are some aholes on here, but they tend to be aholes enough that you can pick them out. if not - just ask sorce - hes read enough posts im sure he could point them out for you :)

Joe,

My intent was never to be insulting. You have nice trees. The advice I gave you was sound. I showed you examples of where I have done some of the techniques I advised you to do.

Yet you accused me of trying to break your pot with an ice pick?

Your wiring was pretty poor. But, you show that you want to improve your trees. So, I tried to guide you towards some resources that would help you.

None is us are born with innate bonsai knowledge. It's something you have to learn. From others.

If you want to do your own thing, sure you'll learn. You may ruin or kill a few trees in the process. I was trying to keep that from happening.

Good luck with your trees.

Ok , I believe the way some things are suggested are a little intimidating for a beginner, why not start out with some care tips , experiences we've had with the species ,etc. Instead we tell him to go crazy on a tree he just got and he knows very little about bonsai techniques , not the way I feel we should have started out there a certain ways to make cuts , wire types, tools, watering habits , soil, soil conditions , shit tons of info.Adair when beginners start at boons does he have them start out with beginner practices? I'm sure he does, try to start there when giving advice to beginners. Very intimidating and I'm sure he feels violated. Think before we speak , jesus please just keep this trees alive for a year at least , that is the first step.

No tree, no bonsai

Jriddle, I'll go back and review what I said here to see if I went too fast.

To answer your question about how Boon teaches: no, he does not start off a beginner with a soft overview. He teaches advanced technique from the start. Why teach stuff you'll have to unlearn and learn over? Maybe the tree a newbie starts on is not one of his top trees, but it's not raw stock either. It's probably very similiar to Joe's trees. (Without the flaws.). He usually does start a newbie with wire on aluminum rather than copper. Not because aluminum is easier, it's because it's cheaper. And I can guarantee that Boon will not accept anyone's first wiring job!

The student will wire a branch, Boon will inspect it. She them all the errors they made. And tell them to remove it, and do it again. Well, it might take 3 or 4 attempts before Boon will accept that one branch! (And even then, he often removes it after the class is over, and rewired it in copper!). So, why waste copper on something he knows he's going to unwire?

After that first class the student graduates to copper.

But, other than that, everyone does the same thing. Beginners get more attention than experienced students. Veterans are told what to do, and when they're done, Boon comes over and adjusts. Of course, if you have a question, Boon will help you anytime.

Sometimes newbies are paired with experienced students to help. I mean, pulling needles is pulling needles. Sometimes it takes two people to pull all the needles on an advanced tree. When repotting a large tree, one person holds the tree while it's on its side while the other scrapes the bottom.

But it's all the same work!

I'm not saying you were too fast, everyone learns at a different pace, clearly he's not ready , or doesn't want to dive in to make these trees the way you think? I don't want him to just stop posting or participating , he's got some decent trees and I suspect these won't be the last

That's a shame really. I feel where your coming from somewhat , too many opinions , and know it alls, the trees you have aquired so far most here would dream of having. Just worry about keeping those bad boys alive and watch how they grow and respond

At the risk of sounding like one of the aholes, or maybe I am already considered a member of that club, I did not see a single tree that I would dream of having. They were impressive in size, but all appeared to require major work to get them in shape. The only one that was interesting was the one that is being used as the avatar and even it has a taper issue. Some very good advice was given in this thread as to how to start the work. While Adair is a SOB (son of Boon, lol), HE KNOWS BONSAI. I read all of his threads and responses.

I didn't say everyone I'm well aware. There is alot of good material here on the site , I said most , we won't go there there though, I don't dream of having them. I enjoy the trees I own. I feel I have some decent ones. So, good job arsehole!:D:p

Jriddle,

What happened is not that WE told him to go crazy with the tree. What happened is HE went went crazy with it!

My first comment was about the Pondy. It looked like it was backwards. Don confirmed that the pictures he showed at first was the back of the tree.

I then suggested he kill the moss on the bark of the elm trees with vinegar so as to not harm the bark in an attempt to remove it. What did he do? Ripped the moss off, taking the bark with it. Didn't bother with the vinegar. There's still some moss on there. But not only that, he removed ALL the moss on the rootball! I certainly didn't tell him yo do that.

And then he trims it up. Removes 90 percent of the foliage.

Next, he states he had a friend coming over to show how to wire. What happens? The friend comes over, and behold! The tree is already wired! A guy wire is attached to a board the tree and pit is sitting on. If something moved the pot, but not the board, it's likely to damage the branch. When that issue was pointed out, he goes and makes bumpers all around to keep the pot from shifting.

So, at that point, I describe in considerable detail how to properly guy wire a branch.

The next post, he starts calling people rude, insinuates that I told him to cut off all the branches, which I explicitly said is something that has to be done, but not in this case! He goes on to state that I wanted him to damage his pot with an ice pick!

Then goes on to tell us we don't deserve to own trees like this unless we win the lottery.

Who is insulting who here?

I know a lot about SOME bonsai. I know absolutely nothing about others! I only comment on things I know about. There is far to much to know. I have to limit the scope in order to be competent in a few areas.

Yes, I agree! I'd like for him to slow down, get some education and training before he does anything else!

I'm sure these trees weren't cheap either. I would hate to see something to happen to them , when someone more experienced could have had a chance to purchase. Any who mauro is coming in next month , lol
