Why do you post stuff like this? We all know you don’t care for JBP, you prefer Pacific Northwest yamadori. That’s fine. But Wilson evidently likes JBP, and this post is about how he wants to improve them.

I don’t particularly care about tropicals, ficus and Brazilian Rain Trees, etc. But I know there are many who do. So, I don’t even open those threads. Why should I waste my time?

Why don’t you start some threads USING YOUR TREES IN DEVELOPMENT and show us how great those PacNW trees are? I mean, from your posts, you make it sound that we should all give up on our trees and do those! But, you never show us what we’re missing!

Come on... put up or shut up!

Saturday, I visited this magical grower’s place with Wilson. Got this clunker, who got topped and that I will bring home in the spring. Nebari is mighty nice (sorry for the bad pictures) and about 3-4 inches wide.

This batch is seed grown, about 10-12 years of culture, all in pots. I am stunned at the vigour of JBP even in small containers at the development stage. It is backbudding on the trunk.

@Potawatomi13 I am a guy who enjoys variety, and as @Adair M mentioned I love JBP. I have all kinds of funky local species I work, but I have JWP, various types of chinese elms, azaleas, cherries, loads of bald cypress, all types of trees that don't belong in my zone 4. I use two different interior storage sites currently, and will better develop the interior space at my home. My goal is to have a beautiful cold room where I can enjoy all my deciduous, and zone sensitive trees.

@Cosmos pine is a real beauty, and both of us will have a blast learning all the nuances of JBP development, and refinement. I picked up a nice big trunk just like his, the week before. So we will be able to have the trees exactly in the same stage, a cool way to share our adventure.

I think I have potted up close to a dozen young JBP in the last little while, and have been meaning to share some. I will try to photograph the lot, but for now I have this. After reading great articles about JBP development from @Brian Van Fleet , @Eric Schrader , Jonas D., I knew I wanted to get a bunch of young stock. Here are two of the repots, just fun projects.

@bonhe here is the funky kotobuki this year, just thinking about I am planning the coming years. It is another skinny trunk kotobuki, but I absolutely love the bark and dark green needles.

Thanks for sharing. It looks very nice.
I don’t know if you can bring it up as the last picture; otherwise the slanting or semi-cascade will be fine. You may have to prune the spring shoot now and to fertilizer it. You can also remove any unnecessary branches now.

Another winter where covid forces us to spend more time with our trees. Repots have started, and as always it's great to see what is going on hidden from our eyes. I have been pruning and cleaning up trees when I have the time. My yatsabusa black pine got a good clean out, but the cascade branch hasn't been touched since I made a wedge cut to move it.

Not a black pine, but I don't have a thread for this white pine. Young twin trunk, just potted into a temporary pot for the next few years.
