Hello, has anyone tried Acer oliverianum as a bonsai. im finding near zero information on the species online. i see that mr maple has sold some in the past https://mrmaple.com/search?q=Acer+oliverianum . maybe someone here picked one up? i bought some seeds from treeseedman and have them stratifying now. im interested in this species since its seemingly more heat tolerant than j. maple and trident. It would be nice to grow a maple that doesnt suffer from leaf burn.

Check out https://mendocinomaples.com/maples-for-hot-and-sunny-areas/. They have a list of certain maple cultivars that seem to do better in hotter climates.
thanks, im waiting on some these to become available at my local bonsai nursery probably in spring.
Long internodes killed me trying this as a bonsai.
i see, i did message mr maple to see if they knew anything about these in bonsai form but they messaged me back that they didn't know. i would still like to try this species out, I'll have to wait to see how my seedlings turn out in 6 months

Tridents tend to do pretty well down here, you’ve had trouble?

No sorry I shouldn’t have mentioned trident. Some leaves are a little crispy but it may be due to pests. But I noticed that the tridents at house of bonsai are little crispy at the edges as well. I was thinking of getting a mister fan for next summer. I’m hoping it would help with leaf burn on a new to me coral bark j. Maple. It’s been neglected for about 5 years sitting right next to a shed, three feet of 90% shade cloth over it, and a shaded tarp on its other side. It got almost no sun for all that time. Most of its leaves are crispy but it recently put out new growth which I’m hoping is heat tolerant

Maples are tough for sure. Mine is under 50% shade cloth 100% of the time, in pure akadama. It didnt burn at all this year, but I may have just gotten lucky.
