It was 15 F in my backyard last week...but it's 75 F right now. These are pics of a trident maple I had planted out in my yard...I noticed the evening before the hard freeze that it had LEAVES on it...and it was in the ground. It survived the deep freeze with a heavy cloth tarp thrown over it, but it is now potted up and still pushing.

This is a picture of my Prunus mume, and various Japanese quince. The ume, on the right, has been all over the place this past 6 months...dropped its leaves in Early September due to extreme summer heat, started flowering around Thanksgiving, and has had leaves on it for almost a month. The quinces have been flowering/pushing leaves for almost a month as well.

Today, I was out in the garden and noticed that my Japanese Red Pine has swelling buds. Crazy!! I'm sure many of us have had deciduous trees wake up early, but usually the conifers take there time waking up...I've never had to protect a pine or juniper from freezing temps. I guess there is a first for everything. The tree and I won't mind light frosts, but I'll be reluctant to let the soil freeze again on this one this year.

Hello Dave... Crazy over here in your old home area as well. Not really with temp swings, but the steady mid 50s degrees f. Almost all of my trees, mostly junipers, have started and reverted back to a healthy green color. As soon as they start pushing growth, I am going to have to movie them in and out for some sun.

It is definitely a strange "spring." I have crabapple trees with pristine apples AND leaves pushing, weird... I also have a trident completely leafed out, and just about every other one is leafing as well. Every flowering tree has swelling buds, which is what I worry about most, I don't want them to swell and freeze off, leaving me with no fruit over the summer. We'll see what happens.
