A little back story on this plant...
My grandfather, long ago, ran a nursery and landscaping business out of his house, at one time he had over 1000 azalea bushes growing on his property. The ones I used to run around, hide in, and jump out to scare my siblings, mom, and aunts, still line a portion of his driveway... So when he told me that he was going to be digging them up and moving them elsewhere about 2 years ago, I asked him if I could have a couple...
This past weekend, I was following some advice and cutting the roots at a distance from the tree in order to promote fibrous roots closer to the trunk... To my surprise, the tree only had roots pushing out to about a foot from the tree...
Keep in mind that this azalea is about 35~ years old, and has never been moved from this spot, though my grandfather regularly ditches around them in order to promote drainage from his driveway and garden downhill from there (a fact that I had forgotten).
Well, while I was trying to figure out how far out the roots were from the tree, I leaned on the shovel and the whole bush lifted... At this point I said "game on" and went to town... I pray that it stays healthy, and that it takes off. I'm going to get my hands on some fertilizer soon in order to acidify the new soil I put in with it, hopefully promoting root growth.
This is my first time trying to mess with an azalea, and I really hope I don't kill it, because of the memories associated with it... I think I'm better off right now due to not having to cut any roots.
Anyway, here's the Beast.
First group of pictures is where it's been for 30+ years, I think that's a 1/4 cup measuring cup.
