Every now and then I do something with the site that scares me. Suffice it to say that Oracle (the company) is ending official support for MySQL 8.0, which was our database structure. Today I migrated our database from MySQL to MariaDB, and then had to update several versions to bring it up-to-date. I have been around tech long enough that rarely do things go off without a hitch. But this time it did :) Perhaps it was the two cups of coffee? The sign of success is when no one notices service interruption.

Perhaps the site is a little faster? Regardless, we are good now at least until 2029...

As a computer programmer since 1995, Congrats that's a rare feat. :)

It is impossible to stay up with all the various iterations... until you are forced to jump ship. MySQL 8.0 will be officially dead as of April 2026. I think Oracle has different priorities... particularly with enterprise and cloud products, versus maintaining an open source code base.
I know MariaDB is a fork of MySQL, but that was 16 years ago - so that's still impressive!

I have friends that made their career with mysql and implementing it at various companies and frameworks.
At work I'm using cell counters that rely on it, good to know that I'll have to ask the manufacturer about it.

Yes, thanks B'nut! This has always been the place I've felt most comfortable both posting pics of my dumb ass potted trees and conversing about all things bonsai. If this site ever went down ala Bonsaitalk, I'd be lost. I'd also spend WAY WAY less time staring at my phone and Chromebook... and I'd have WAY WAY more $$$ in my checking account but 🤷‍♂️... it's all good😬

Congratz!

If you really want to give the forum a boost (and you want to have some fun at the same time) you can always try adding a cache to the forum. It will make the fly and probably reduce your server costs.

Really though Dave. I do post on instagram from time to time, but this is consistently the one place I always feel comfortable posting my trees and thoughts on Bonsai in general. Thanks for all your efforts Greg. Clearly it does not go unseen!!
