I imported a JWP after a visit to Japan in 2000. It came bare rooted with sphagnum moss. It never missed a beat and I still have the tree 23 years later. This was the last year to import before the 2 year quarantine was put into place. Get this...if what I was told was correct...mine was shipped with some deciduous trees that had a pest, sent back to Japan, immediately resent, made it to Rochester, was repackaged and forwarded to me...over 5 weeks in a box!

Entire thread is interesting. I would ere on the side of adding mycorrhizza. I would take a bit from various established pines I have and use it. I definitely would use charcoal or bio-char as well.

Mine came bare root to my island 6 months ago in the middle of a heatwave. As much as I know, it was planted in an akadama+lava mix and was in a humid lighthouse for some months. It's a risky operation, and I will not be sure about the result till summer.....
Here it is laying in my garden
