Bonsai Watering Can Student Project!

Outside I use a hose with a watering wand to reach the pots on the back shelf so I can stand further away so my feet don't get wet.

Inside for my tropicals I use a small watering can with a long narrow spout to direct water where I want it.

For trees in the garage over the winter. I use a cup on a 3 ft pole for the ones in back and just a cup for the ones in front all ladled out of 5 gal buckets.

I use a hose and cheap pistol. Make sure your can doesnt overflow out the top when its tilted all the way foreward. I have up on two cans because they do that. It ends up pooring out the top not the spout if its leaning too far, allowing more to come out than needed and splashing all over. Outside its no problem but inside its annoying.

My wife uses a pump sprayer, that I modified with a longer hose, to water dozens of her houseplants throughout the house.

Curious what you will come up with; I water my inside trees with a pitcher (ineffective!).

You gotta get you a juice bottle!

Some caps are brittle, gotta be melted for holes...some can be punched....
All are effective.....

All are free!

I use(d) a 2 liter with holes in cap and side to water previously but it is still very difficult to water the trees in the center of my setup with it.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about how much it sucks to use 2 liters because they collapse. They're loud....and a lot more temporary than a good juice bottle.

Those wands with the pump sprayers sound like a good idea to stretch reach....thin, decent coverage.

For myself, I've found that, if something is hard to reach, it may not get the attention it needs...
Even stuff that needs to just grow, and can be left without much thought, still needs a bit more attention IMO.
Part of the diligence necessary to perform PPB.

Anyway....even a good juice bottle is temporary, and she threw out the last one I asked her to keep....so here is a new one.

I tried something a little different this time....and when it comes to these....I am now sure this is the best way to make them.

The bottle.

The holes. On one side...IMPORTANT.
Melted in with following hot drywall screw....
From the inside, also IMPORTANT.
20160117_081645.jpg
Really small holes...only the tippy tippy...
Just enough to make a hole that the melt doesn't close.

That's where personal preference and needs come into play......
The pattern, and amount of holes.

I make mine to more or less soak my 4in baskets from one angle.

But with more holes, melted in at different angles, you can tailor output to needs.
Angle of melt is important. And small holes for fine streams is important.
If you need more output....more small holes....

I'm going to make a thread called,
Perfecting the Stupid Stuff! Lol.

Well theyre hard to reach cuz I have too many tropicals for the space I have... Need to buy another light or two.

I was thinking it is waaaaaay worse inside...it was for me....
Having the right amount of stuff has been paramount to healthy enjoyment....

Not to mention Healthier trees.

That Stack ranking thread really set off bells for me! It worked!

I too use a pump sprayer (no nozzle) inside and normally a hose (various spray nozzles) outside. For fert/chemicals I use a normal inexpensive 2gal plastic watering can. Tried the expensive copper bonsai watering can from Japan but if you have more than a couple of trees they are very inconvenient. Make sure you search for various bonsai watering cans as many of our bonsai dealers have a variety. Then you can ask specific questions of those who use them.

Interesting project. Make sure you keep us up to date and especially your final product.

Need the wayering can to begin to capture the rainfall once the rainfall has adequately watered the bonsai.

Think about doing what Sandy does only smaller like using measuring cups and a large plastic coffee container for water....

Excellent idea, the ladle method has been used in Japan for hard to reach plants for years. I remember seeing it recently in a picture or two Sergio posted from his recent tour(s).
