Calamondin orange tree flowering

CPT judging from the lighter next to your tree the trunk is about a half an inch wide ? If so then you should be able to bend it some as its pretty thin and should be flexible enough that would give it some character and take away from that long pipe like section below the fork up top.

it is actually 1" diameter and I do not have a trunk clamp nor do I think it would bend easily.
If I had obtained it at a younger stage it could have been done, I understand that it is not an appealing form in bonsai standards.
I am not familiar with working larger diameter bending techniques and I do not have anyone within my area that could assist me with such a task.
should I just attempt it and succeed/fail, or let it grow?

Must be a big lighter :) its hard to judge sizes from a picture ! If you can bend the trunk in your hands then wiring it and bending it would suffice. I have no idea how an orange tree grows, does it heal scars well or grow over chops easily? I would not want to advise you on trunk clamps as they usually scar, other methods to bend more brittle trunks scar too and would need to heal over through growing out. I have seen pic online of these as Bonsai so hopefully someone here with knowledge of this tree will step up and offer you some experienced guidance. Good luck with it.

I have considered a harsh trunk chop and starting over with development, as well as air-layering, and just letting grow as an uninteresting upright

is there any potential for a thread graft, or any kind of graft really? to try and bring more branching growth from the big straight section

They can be grafted, but that is a whole different skill set, not a ''new beginner'' technique. Not easy to explain in 25 words or less. There are many treads on the topic of grafting, technique is same for all deciduous, so check maple topics for outlines of the how too.
