Bonsai Mike
Mame
I made my first Facebook auction purchase as a Christmas/Birthday present for myself. It arrived ahead of schedule today and i felt like our little one when he tore into His Nintendo switch as I unwrapped it. I have never had a tree shipped before and it was packed very well.
The trunk has about a 2” base and it’s an air layer from a mature tree. The seller let these whips run out with the intention of thread grafting. I was almost wondering if I could root them and use them next year for root grafts instead. Either one would be a new project to try.
I know it needs a repot in spring, and I’ll get a better look at the roots. I actually like the current size of the tree and want to work on roots then ramification. Part of me wants to try slipping a tile under there and sticking it in a mica training pot I have in the garage. I also have the option of an Anderson flat. Not sure just yet.
It’s gonna chill in my unheated garage until spring as a precaution. I know an Amur can take my winters like a champ but it came from Cali so this will be the buffer year on temps.
Its structure actually reminds reminds me of silver maples that occur natively around here in riparian areas and were used as street trees pretty extensively in the past.
Thoughts and input appreciated
