@penumbra , how big is the possible variance from top shelf and bottom shelf in a kiln like TJ's?

I know, for reduction, it can be wild.. but what about electric?

Just, OP, I hate to see you mess around too much at cone 5, if you could systemically fire to a "strong" cone 6, but still have the top fire to a "strong cone 5" or maybe even "soft" cone 6.

Still can’t figure out the cream glaze. Tried it on a different clay body and I didn’t get a bunch of bubbles this time, but it still doesn’t look good. I think maybe it was too thin on the application? I did 4 coats of glaze but I guess it just needs more. Maybe next time I’ll also try firing it to cone 6 instead of cone 5.

Yes, if you fire at cone 6 there's a world of well tested glazes you can use.

I use, because I got for free, cone 05 and 06 clear glaze (I use this to craft other glazes)... Fired up to cone 8 (my reduction kiln will fire to "soft" 6 on the top shelf ; even cone 6, light cone 7 towards the front on the middle shelf; and the bottom shelf will fire 7/8 ).

For those low-fire glazes, because they already will contain boron, I will use a sodium/magnesium (I've messed with zinc and calcium, as well) combo to stabilize, and then add an additional source of silica.

This entire process is VERY useful in crafting ash glazes... Because, if you know how to 'control" your 'burn" for ash collection, your ashes can contain sizeable silicone AND various fluxes (not to mention the random, trace 'goodies).

I think my game plan moving forward is going to be to focus on this clay body and the lighter red clay body. Going to try to just get these 2 dialed in and see how they work with my glazes.

Little brown hex - this is another brown clay body I tried, but I am not going to use this one any further because the other brown is better, I think.

Approve, no, love, covet, yes. I don't even care what size it is or that I've been on a pot buying spree lately, I want it.

My kiln is only 18” opening, so it will be a few years until I can upgrade to a larger kiln to have to worry about cracking 20” pots

Trees cover a multitude of mistakes, like Love covers a multitude of sins.

I'm also going to send BSD's south to nab that pot off @Carol 83 's shelves.....and yes ...I have fashioned them with lock pick sets so even if it's indoors .....I'm swiping it!



Aye to underfired cream. But just cu it looks "dry", not seeing the color get creamier. You can probably add a little rutile to get it creamier. Or iron, or anything dirty, gold art, yard clay, etc..

My arm strength sucks, but I agree, it is amazing. Not that often you see that dark purple. I do have another dark purple from @Pitoon that is beautiful as well.

Between the color, the hare's fur texture, the shape, and those drips, that's just a perfect pot
