Mr. Richard Ota is probably one of the best artists in the Southern California regarding to JBP and grafting. He told me he used to make thousands of grafted cork pine about 30 years ago. This is a story from him. He bought few large cork pines as a stock from Japan. He started grafting them into JBP. After few years, he had thousands of them and started selling. His technique of grafting is excellent. As you can see, the graft site is very low, almost in the soil line!! I'm having lots of 2 years old seedling KBP at this time. Next February, I will learn cork pine grafting technique with him.

Are the cork pines you speak of white pines?
 
It is Pinus thunbergii var. corticosa
