I have a few trident maples in my yard that have two distinctive leaf types. The leaf on the right is a cutting from a larger tree that was purchased a couple of years ago. The tree on the left is a year old seedling. I personally like the one on the left better.
I guess what I'm looking for is any information on the types. Maybe like which is more desirable or whether the one on the left can be made to look more aesthetically pleasing.
Thanks in advance.

There is only one "kind" of trident maple. But, like many maples, the leaf shapes are quite variable -- occasionally even on the same tree. Leaf shapes also change with the age of the tree.

Both of those leaves are pretty much the same cultivar. Only the age is apparent here. The sawtooth edging is juvinile and will dissapear as the leaf and plant ages. The differences between the cultivars of trident are very pronounced and you can see the difference easily. Naruto, the one in the thread last week has a cupped upward look to it. there is a varigated leaf, and one that is sort of a dissectum. Then there is one with a long middle lobe that looks like it is flipping the bird. There is one that has a sort of moon feel to the leaf that I find unattractive. The two leaves you show are the most common and the others aren't nearlly as agressive a grower as the common type is. Pretty cultivars always seem to be weak and in tridents this is the case also.

Vertrees lists about 20 cultivars. There may be more.
