Preface: Just bought a pair of $20 scissors from Kaneshin. They have great/responsive customer service, and have already offered to exchange the scissors if I want. I also bought two other quality tools. From my interactions, I highly recommend them.

Question: Do these scissors have too much play? Are they defective and should I ask for an exchange?

In most positions they cut well. But if I apply a slight amount of pressure to the bottom of the handle, it creates a gap in the blades and they don't cut correctly. I have never bought a pair of bonsai scissors before, so I don't know if this is normal or a defect.

Shouldn't be a gap. The rivet may be loose and as mentioned above, tapping on the rivet with a hammer where the blades are joined can help tighten it if. Don't pound on it obviously, but hard enough to move the metal a bit.

Kaneshin as well as Joshua Roth have a slight gap. You can adjust it by taping the rivet with a hammer. I tried to get the info from their website but they have upgraded it since and there is none available. This new site is better for shopping but it is a downgrade from the last as they had a lot of information on all their tools.
