It depends on how I want it to look, and if I can safely torch it.
Fresh deadwood can be wired and then heated so that it's easier to keep it into position.
In some spots I don't like the smooth finish with wire brushes, so I torch.
In some other spots I don't want to lime sulfur just het because I want the wood to rot, so I torch and keep it damp.
In some spots I want to make the sticking out parts more blunt but I already lime sulfured, so I torch.
In some spots I can't torch because it's too close to foliage I want to keep, so I don't.
In some spots I can easily peel the wood fibers, so I don't.
In some spots I'm experimenting with sublimation of wood through chemical oxidation, so I don't torch.
In some spots it wouldn't be logical to see torched wood, so I don't.

I have a torch. I don't use it for deadwood often. I prefer lime sulfur. I do use my torch for shou sugi ban for most of my outdoor benches and tables. It's very similar in practice to what is being done with the deadwood. Although a mini torch would probably be safer and more accurate for deadwood treatment.
