drastic weather changes

I've thought it would be fun to build a greenhouse with a temperature control system to winter trees in. My thinking was that a thermostat could turn on a fan/vent when the temperature was too warm and if the temperature was too cold, the thermostat would engage a heater. Maybe something for humidity would also be good too. This way, winter could be near worry free.

I also realized that its probably completely unnecessary, but oh well... I still think it'd be a fun project.

This is exactly what I have built for winter storage of my trees. Heat mats, and a heater with a fan to blow the air around, and a thermostat that turns on heat at 32, and vent and a fan that sucks outside air in at 40. But when the outside air is warmer than 40, there is the problem. That's why I'm thinking of a cooler unit as well. I have humidifiers in there that come on in sequences on timers throughout the day. Here is a link to a thread with info about it.

Ice blocks!

About 8 or 9 gallon block. I suspend left over web strapping for a handle (the lumber yards around here use this instead of the steel strapping they use to for strapping together lumber loads). They are stacking up in my cold storage area.

Thanks Crust, that's a smart idea, I will be making use of it for sure this winter.

Now we've had two days of rain and move above average weather. We were in the 50's yesterday but moving into the 20's with windchills tonight. New Jersey is seeing some shifting in the weather patterns for sure. But, just protect your trees as best you can.

the cold wind coming is what has me nervous. My trees are in the same protection as they were last year and the year before, bury the pots in the ground, throw some mulch on em and put burlap up around the entire area.

But the drastic change has me worried about one of my black pines that came from Cali this year. Maybe it's unwarranted, but as it hasn't been through a NE winter, I'm wondering if i should just dig it up and throw it in the garage with one or two others that require a little more protection. It's gonna get friggin cold, maybe even break into single digits for a day.

Spring is coming in Las Vegas, we had our two week "Winter" so I am getting ready to repot the few trees I have left. :-)

To the Californian and Nevadian: You guys are perverse and ruthless. I just got back from prying out another ice cake out of my rubber bucket (I decided to grease the damned thing now). Its 5 below zero and I have to go to work tomorrow and freeze all day framing---life would be so entirely easy if I inhabited zone 8 or so..or even 7..or 6..or 5..or 4. WWwaaa!

Yea crust but they can't keep larch. You can't live like that!
