Great to see that this gutted out tree is recovering at last, and can live a healthy life instead of being placed in the crippled area of the dead but not so dead yet.

Could be a nice bonsai now ;)

It was good practice! at this stage i quite like it as is. it doesnt need a uro or hollow. different strokes
it will be a nice elm, i much prefer it as a taller tree.

Here's another example to show how we can use wild trees to model bonsai...
this is an Oak tree in Richmond park London

the leader on the Elm goin to the right will give the tree a 'third' change of direction.. i plan to get a sharper bend on it.

How has it responded, well the odd branch died back but nothing to cry about. just had to reduce a few dead stubs and its20210603_135936.jpg responded extremely well on the whole

normally i rub out adventitious shoots, clusters and shoots that wont be used. but because i removed a lot of root i want the tree to grow some back and build up some power.

Here you can see where the initial branches were reduced to....20210603_140631.jpg

i did notice a little blackspot, probably a result of me wetting the leaves too much while watering, so ive stopped that and applied a fungal spray, doesnt seem to be spreading much. i wont be defoliating it. it will be dandy.

Time goes by....

But maybe you have lost a "feature" that made the tree different..

Anyway, if you're pleased with the result, nothing more to say.

To a dry elm tree by Antonio Machado

Cheers
Not very different to me David, because ive had lots of hollow trees😉

this is a better picture,

pretty cool. one of the reasons it went in the ground was because i was losing interest in shohin sized trees.
Now its a bit taller and i have renewed interest in it.
its different now because the bark is beginning to show character, the trunk has movement now with taper, the branch stubs have thickness and taper. the overall shape is changing from a dome to asymmetrical.
so the trunk closed up by itself, i wont reopen it. will be more like the oak i shared above. however, there could be a uro in the apex where the chop is, maybe.

one of my hollow elms i sold a few months ago.

You must be getting younger then! Grown man usually like smaller sizes, more easy to handle 🤣

Nice work anyway, thanks for sharing. 👍

Decided the tree was ready for branch selection, removed all unwanted shoots and wired a bit of movement in and arranged branches with clear primary lines, from all sides. giving depth all around. this will look great from all sides in time

What time of year would you do trunk carving, your fall? Spring? Here in Midwest US, wondering about removing a lower limb and working the trunk there - Summer just starting, bad timing, I suspect

I've been trying to learn pines, and so much of that is calendar driven I just wanted to be sure... Thanks and beautiful tree!
