Extended season starting trees indoors

Hi.Personally I prefer this treatment in starter stock/seedlings.
In pine cuttings I find it very beneficial. The best thing for a pine seedling cutting is to have roots very close to trunk...the initial root density anyway.
Since these pines will be put into a smaller type bonsai pot, they will handle any root pruning quite well.On the other hand if you get massive roots to swell up by letting them run from trunk ,when you cut back to fit in your bonsai pot,it will be quite the drastic root pruning and could very well stunt the tree very hard a couple years.
Here is a 6 mnth pine seedling with dense roots only 1/2 inch from trunk.
I am totally for density big time at a very early age.
And makes very vigorous,so when these do push root growth it will be massive from all directions........more roots more power to uptake all the bio-stimulants.In a smaller package too if need be.

How long do you keep them in the pouch for?
They can handle almost 6 mnths or so...then they get rock hard root density, but I find this preferable as long as you are using inert media like perlite.
Then they look like the pine in picture and can be transplanted anytime during good growing season .......they become so durable

Honestly barerooting and arranging roots,in my opinion, is way down the road. The larger roots will eventually show themselves and become the prominant radial roots as the pine is grown to a larger size which I imagine is what most people are doing with these cutting👍
like at least 3” trunked material with sacrifice leaders shooting to the sky😆
Will probably be considerable swelling since a cutting....they are notorious for doing so as I have heard.....look at this article from Jonas...
I actually like the exagerated roots from cuttings though, personally.

With the fresh american seed I am doing a 30 day warm/60 day cold.
The others maybe the same or 60 warm/90cold.
That fresh seed sank straight to the bottom.
The overnight kelp and fulvic acid soak seems to hasten the whole process for dried seed.
Excited about these American ones....also the Oriental too.
Can you elaborate a little on how you germinate your hornbeam seeds? Like when you say "30 days warm, 60 cold" , are those in a plastic bag kept outside in the summer heat and then moved into a fridge for the cool period? Are they started in a tray of soil? I collected some carpinus seeds the other day and am looking for the best way to get them to grow. Thanks!

aeroponic chinese elm ........coreana hornbeams loving outdoors...my pine too.

Did these chinese elms this morning in the aero cloner.
The Coreana Hornbeams seem to love the sun outside...leaves look very high brix and durable.
Also have this seedling cutting JBP outside 6 days now.Lookin’ good!

the crop of Big Mikawa Pines

Was able to get all the mikawa cuts going.
The stems were nice and red, perfect time for cutting.
I gave these about 4 kelp foliars before cutting,so anticipating about 80% success hopefully.
These will be rooted about 3 weeks and have 6 mnths to grow!
Will be some green mamoths for sure....

Crypomeria Japonica.........Japanese Cedar

I thought it would be cool to make seedling cuttings of these the same way we do pines.
Seems they will root quickly ......at least these are actually propogated from cuttings whereas pines are mostly not.
The little stems seem perfect for rooting actually....seem really high brix....extremely slow even in co2 over a mnth old I believe.
I think these would be nice indoor subjects.
They have literally been sitting with mother fertilizer for the longest time just photosynthesizing.....I imagine these root very quickly👍

Aeroponic Chinese Elms calousing at 4 days!!!

Elm seem more condusive to rooting.
I can tell this will be loaded with root nubs in about a week.Starting to swell alot.
Exciting...I want a few Chinese Elm.Nice low branching on a few of these.....If I have room I will keep one indoors all winter and next season!!

5:2 Fulvic acid /kelp foliar spray

Been taking more time when it comes to spraying once a week with the kelp, especially with young pines since they repel water very efficiently.
I use the atomizing hand sprayer to really coat them like dew.Otherwise the pump sprayer is too coarse and does not do near as good. When there are proper needles it is better with the pump sprayer because mature needles take on the water just fine.

Anyway did everything tonight(always once per week all the time)....the upcoming crop, the mikawa’s in the propagator and also the cryptomeria’s in their propagator.

It makes a differance big time!
Makes cuttings root faster and creates the killer plants.

Just got some yucca in the mail because of your thread. I know you say its a mild fungicide, think it will have any affect on the organisms in soil?

Did some internet searching yestarday and I believe it actually feeds them........mild means really mild I believe. It coats the plant with a protective film too.
Here is a good article

They take on a nice green color after a thourough application of the 5:2 fulvic acid/kelp foliar.

I looked this morning and definately these get happier looking in terms of photosynthesis and energetic leaves.....these are not even the true needles yet!
Definately the growers secret to the seedling cuttings✌️
Get a deep green color.

Still not done with that Harley Smith course, but my plants are looking pretty amazing. It's been 2 weeks since I started the course and I am only halfway thru. They look like they've been growing outside

Coreana Hornbeams @ 3 mnths!!!

Ok these were sewn from seed and some were transplanted to grow on and others were treated as seedling air-layers w/ringbark in an aeroponic cloner.I am going to keep these all. They have been outside for a couple weeks and are getting fertilized with a full strength bloom formula to assist in making strong for winter dormancy.

They definately seem a high brix as the leaves are thick and shiny from extra calcium.Fun stuff for sure✌
I am sure I will be tempted to start next season very early indoors......Good size otherwise for 3 mnths growth......these are essentially past the leggy stage that coreana’s are known to do at first from seed.

Toally digging the drain to waste hydroponics OUTDOORS!!!

JBP seedling cuttings 10 wks from sewn seed.

Pretty good for 10weeks! The whole process.......sewn,cuttings,transplanting till’now.
The roots were outstanding on all of these..I get about 80% success of roots like these now....practice makes perfect.
These will be ready in 3-4 wks.

Mikawa seedling cuttings rooting at 15 days!!!

About 80% of what I looked at had beginnings of roots.Should be another good batch. This is the crop of Mikawa JBP from seed sourced from a grower in Japan.I am excited to grow this crop over the winter season for springtime sale...They will be rather large at 6 mnths old by then.Probably biggest I have grown yet!4E0BCB09-9588-477A-A347-53BA162DD4B3.jpeg10FE4BC0-F59D-472D-B312-2F2359A95DFE.jpeg886B82A7-9D7B-4420-9E0C-69A6664DA60D.jpeg39371A97-B1EC-4863-827E-F1F2774B60FF.jpeg

Cryptomeria seedling cuttings getting some roots.

I will more than likely keep these...The coolest trees!
I am digging the needle colors I get from growing these indoors in the co2!
We shall see..only a couple had roots..more on the way probably.

new media additive(for me)

This course vermiculite actually looks nice as it can hold nutrients with high CEC as opposed to the course perlite I use.So it seems a 1/3rd vermiculite—2/3rd perlite is a good ratio to start......too much vermiculite is a no no.Would be way to soggy.
This is inert media and is said to not decompose.
Definately 33% or less in the media though...unless cuttings or something.
My pines could use a bit more water conservation when rootpouches get hard with roots,so I am testing this ratio first and if too soggy I will bump down to 1/4 vemiculite.I like it’s properties though this course horticultural grade....essentially same ph as perlite .......virtually nuetral.
Cool lookin’ stuff.I will probably always use locally sourced inert media such as these for my small bonsai I create.....looks awesome to me especially after turning brownish from all the humic acid in my daily drenches lol😆

So, I keep wondering, @cmeg1, why you are not growing trees hydroponically? I mean, what do you need with media? Why do you want to use media?

I know these questions have some obvious answers, but why do YOU?
You seem to be on a bent of pot grower turns to the nursery/bonsai trade in mail order (no accusation, just an analogy).

btw, what you're doing is quite interesting.
