Is a ficus religiosa suitable for shohin. If not, then what is the minimum size (approx) for this tree?
The leaves are really big on mine. It is one year old. I just don't know, how much these leaves can be reduced in size.

Post a picture so we know what you are talking about. :) I have never even seen one of these in person. Most Ficus are easy to reduce leave size on, the main thing is light. Ficus with dim or poor light (indoor lighting) will grow large leaves to collect the light. When defoliated and in strong outdoor light the leaves will come back smaller as in most trees. I have had ones that I needed to defoliate 4 times in a summer. When you get it in a small pot it will help along those lines too. The main thing is keeeping it healthy, if its just new you may want to grow it out some to get a thick trunk and cut it back. Shohin means thick small trunk.

Shohin? The leaves are normally bigger than my open palm...I won't even consider it for medium bonsai so I wish you good luck!

There are easier ficus to make a shohin out of. ;)

I didn't say, I am going to make a shohin out of this tree, no matter what. I simply asked, if it was possible. Now I know, it's not. I will try to make a bigger one. I also know, it's not gonna happen in a decade, because it is a seedling. Actually it is less then a year old. I started this tree from seed last summer.

This is a medium size (26") religiosa:

Thanks for your answers.

Likewise, I didn't say it is not doable. I just won't use it because of the leaf size. ;) As I said, there are better and easier choices and I opt to us those instead.

Please do not let me or my choices discourage you.

Well, I am not discouraged, because I wasn't determined. I asked for help, before I make my decision. I asked people with more experience. I always do that. And I still have time to think about it.
I have to let it grow for a few years before I can do anything with it. Right?
You helped me.
So, thank you for your input.

The bo tree leaves do reduce in size from bonsai culture, but they are still quite large. You won't be able to have a small bo tree bonsai because it won't look right. They look best in larger sizes like 2 feet tall. Google bo tree bonsai. You'll see that all the nice ones are pretty big.

Once this one is big enough, move it into a big but shallow plastic bin. They have really strong roots though which need to be maintained. Bigger pot will allow it to grow faster.
