Field collected trees

It didn't drill any draining. I used 3 pieces of fence picket I built the box out of. The gaps in the slats should be enough right?
It doesn't look like there are gaps between the slats on the bottom? If they're pressed somewhat close together, water will eventually erode the substrate and compact it and potentially clog up the small gaps. I've never built boxes personally but from I've seen people will usually leave larger gaps and push some mesh to cover those gaps. Maybe its just the angle of the photo, but it doesn't look like water would be able to drain freely through. I would also be mindful of the type of wood you're using. I'm no expert, but there are some types of wood that will rot through quite quickly as containers.

I would not call fall collecting "perfect". One of the problems with fall collecting is that, in that zone (6 I think), you have to protect newly collected trees from extreme cold, or you can loose them. It's just a hassle IMO. I have done it in areas where there will be to much snow in the spring. Spring is actually a better time and doing it right when trees are budding out. Once you see buds coming and green showing, get with it. Once they start pushing growth, they will just keep going if collected correctly.
You say you're moving. Moving from the Boise area? Nice area but getting very crowded and expensive.
What?

I said trees that I'm removing anyway.

But yeah, you got that right. We actually are looking to possible move next year. Alaska is the most likely. This was a bad hobby to get into right before that.

Here is a wiring guide by a older Bonsai Guy that I have watched many times. I think it is very well done and pretty easy to understand. Hope you find it good for you also.
