Need help identifying this on my maple forest planting, looks like a snowflake almost....is it some form of fungus or something?DSC06712.jpgmaple3c.jpg

It's lichen. Some find this desireable on older trees. Won't hurt them and marks them as old. Takes quite a bit of time for this to develop. It will probably die off as the tree lives on in a container.

If you don't like it a toothbrush and a little water should scrub it off. If it's stubborn get the tweezers out!

If it spans a node it may stop the bud from popping (will shade the bud junction too) but your call. :p

In my experience, lichen like this are highly dependent on local environmental conditions. Once removed from those conditions, they die off rather quickly.

That's been my experience too. I collected two trees from upstate NY that had lots of lichen, and it's pretty much all died off.
