I’m looking to order a pot for this willow leaf. What is the right size pot for this tree and how much root reduction is reasonable for the first repotting?

Here are a few options I'm looking at:

1)

2)

3) I really like the cream color but unfortunately this one is out of stock right now.

4) Don't like the color on this one but the size may be right.

I prefer brown unglazed or dark glazed pots for nerifolia. Unglazed shaped on the feminine side, and glazed shaped more on the masculine.

Nerifolia are basically epiphytes, so you can reduce their roots down to almost nothing (in the late spring, early summer) and get it into a shallow pot if you want. Width, based on spread and trunk should be around 10.5-12”.

It’s still unstyled, but assuming you’re keeping the trunk and styling it into a banyan look, If it was mine, here are a few I’d consider.

Received the pot today! That was an excellent call! Thanks! I was hesitant ordering from eBay but I was really impressed with the packaging.

You can cut the willow leaf’s roots pretty drastically during its first repot. I took a saw basically to the base and removed over 60% of its roots to flatten the root base so it would sit better in the pot. It’s in a plastic pot from Amazon, 8 inches wide.

Good pick. Matt is an excellent and reputable pot dealer...about the best in the country.
I wait to repot my nerifolia when it’s consistently warm out...May/June here.

Should I defoliate it too? The leaves are yellowish but they haven't dropped yet.

Brian is firing crack a concern or it’s only cosmetics? Can they propagate over time?
This one looks interesting too but it has crack near the drainage hole.

Mine always drop most if not all their leaves in the green house in the winter, on really cold night smy heated green house can get down to 35 at night.
Mine drops its leaves every winter, indoors. First time if freaked me out, now I just find it irritating.

Probably won’t be a problem. Looks like it’s been used for a long time, and no evidence the crack has grown recently. It also doesn’t look like it’s all the way through the bottom. I would avoid letting it get too much below freezing, and never apply pressure to that hole, such as tie down wires or guy wire anchors. Did Matt say it still rings, or does it sound dead? If it rings, I’d be less concerned.

Put some super glue on the crack and you're good to go. I wouldn't worry about it much, if Matt listed it ...its in good shape.

I haven’t asked. I’ll check with him.
