111F tomorrow, hope the trees are ready. Shade cloth tightened up, misters on moved some to get more shelter. I have done all I can do so here we go!

Hit about 40 degrees last night and tonight it's 47 and raining in Grand Rapids, MI. At least you can keep trops outside. haha :D

But really, that's ridiculous. I definitely don't envy you...I couldn't take that heat!

Wow, good luck to your trees! Sounds like you have. Good setup though.

We've only hit 98 so far so I should count my blessings. At least you have a good set-up...I don't and cannot have shade cloths due to HOA restrictions :(

Hey Clyde- the easy solution is to air condition your garage and move the collection inside! Simple!

Try to stay comfortable if you can.

Wow, that's crazy - good luck! I know that you've posted your trees before, but just out of curiosity, what kind of trees are you able to keep out there?

I have experimented with all kinds of stuff but the ones that have done the best are Pomegranate, Olive, Bougs, Vitex, Crape Myrtle, various junis, oaks, a prairie fire crab (that won't ever flower but it lives)

Clyde,

Have you tried boxwood, yaupon holly, and cedar elm? They seem to work perfectly well here in TX.

I am sure box would do just fine as it is really common for landscape. I have not tried it for some reason. Yaupon, I love'em but I have killed every single one. I have a few elms (no cedar) and we will see what happens. The ones I listed I have had for more than 3 years.

Sorry to hear that milehigh_7. Truly, I am. I'll think about you from the 79 degree golf course. Might even wear long pants ;)

I jest, but it sounds like you're prepared for it. How do you have your shade cloths set up?

Boxwood is fast becoming my favorite...worth a try if you find an opportunity. Re: yaupon, I wonder why. The ones I collected seems bullet proof. Some were chopped to almost no roots and down to a few inches stump but they still sprout like crazy. I also collected some out of season (last month) and those too sprouted.

@berobinson82 :p My set up is that I went to Home Depot and bought 24de3651-29d5-4a25-ae5a-6930f4edfcad_300.jpgThen replaced the top with shade cloth and added misters (the kind for irrigation not a patio). Then hung shade cloth on the west facing side as well to shield from afternoon sun.

@Poink, Yea I don't know what my issue is with yaupons... Boxwood is so common but I have not known if I should mess with the the regular varieties or stick to the dwarfs...

We are at 102 today. Not quite as hot as you are, but we can get pretty hot here too. Average for the summer is about 105. I have felt 110. It is not pretty.

Anyone not knowing what 110 degrees feel like, just imagine walking from your front door to get in your car in the driveway. When you first feel the outside it feels like you just walked inside an oven. It will actually take your breath away. then when yu get to your car, you can't touch anything on it bare metal cause it will burn you. If you have a black interior it will be like 150 degrees inside and a human locked inside will die in about 4 minutes.

Yea 110 is a weird threshold. You know you have hit it because you can smell the fabric softener on your clothes like they just came out of the drier. I have gone to work with perfectly healthy trees and come home to sticks with potato chips on them... :( The good news is we may have a move in our future.
