Highbush Blueberry yamadori

The woods here are full of highbush blueberries, always amazes me how nuts they get below the soil. I have learned that just because they have a 1 inch trunk above the soil, that it may flare out to 5 inches or more under the soil. They'll lose the main trunk at some point and grow a new one I assume based on some I find with multiple rotted out holes in the root flare that have a lot of character. I dug up 7, I think, last year and they all survived, 2 abandoned their trunk and suckered from the base though sadly.

The growth habit giveth and the growth habit taketh away.

You probably thought of this, but draping an open weave cloth over the trees with fruit about to ripen will let sun in, but keep birds out. It will save a few more berries to top your ice cream. A light muslin gauze or open weave cloth. (muslin not to be confused with Muslim  )

I was delighted to find blueberry varieties in a local nursery that only require 100 - 150 chill hours which means I can grow some too! Looking forward to catching up with y'all.
