Anyone recognize this tree? The person I got it from thinks they grew it from a native seedling but no idea on it's species. The person had another tree of the same type growing in the ground that was flowering but I didn't get a picture of the blooms.

My closest guess is some kind of honeysuckle, but it's not like any type of honeysuckle I've seen growing around here.

Pardon my brainfart. Smells like burnt oil.

My brainfart that is, not the tree.

The venation of the leaves makes me think dogwood of some sort. Are the leaves opposite in arrangement?

Hadn't heard of Heptacodium before, it looks close but the flowers don't quite match the way I remember the one in ground looking. I'll have to get a picture of the flowers to get a better idea without relying on memory.

The leaves are opposite and veinous but the flowers don't look right for dogwood.

possibly a fringe tree? Were the flowers white and hanging in clusters?

Thought this may help a bit. Seems odd that it's flowering now when the other one flowered a month and a half ago. It was repotted though, may have it's wires crossed.

Hopefully I remember to attach the pic this time.
