Hi all, I have this maple under my porch and noticed this on it. Not in a pot, regular soil. There are I believe a ton of ants living in the soil below it if that helps, or there were a month ago. Not sure if it's location, watering. Fertilizer, idk. Possibly one other maple had a leaf of it I removed today, will reinpect tomorrow. Two days of drama in my garden 😢 20240520_195148.jpg20240520_195139.jpg

to much shade and moist, still air. it'll be totally fine, but introduce it to more sunlight and air flow very slowly. Like penumbra said, it's powdery mildew rom being overly wet and shaded. don't do anything drastic.

Ty all. It's planted in my garden, but I will definitely reduce watering. Any remedies, or just let it be? Should I relocate the potted maple next to it? They're essentially touching

I’ve had good success treating landscape trees with copper fungicide, but certainly agree that for bonsai in particular, prevention is paramount.

Follow the directions carefully when reaching for the chemicals though.

Couldn't find the greencure, but have the copper fungicide concentrate coming 4-8 am, Amazon, will treat tomorrow. I cut these trees back hard before spring and all of them exploded and still have young growth. Should I thin them out anyway to improve the airflow? They're like mop heads and I'm not a "maple guy" per se, so looking for best advice 😉 20240429_163423.jpg
There's one of them, not the one with wicked powdery mildew, tho. Just not a lot of air flow in it I guess.

Powdery mildew is VERY easily treatable. You can spray milk-water (1:9 ratio milk to water) a couple times and it'll be handled. Just about any fungicides will treat it. The best plan is to prevent it, like was mentioned.

Ok, perhaps this is deep, but skim, 2%?, would the milk water be just as effective as CF, or preferred in any specific case, like a deeper stage as mine is showing? Ty so much, everybody.

To me, your case doesn’t look too advanced. We get MUCH worse cases around here all the time, but then again “cold”, “damp”, and “dark” are three of our 4 seasons. Hadn’t heard of the milk, but that is very cool. The tree should recover with some treatment.

I went for the hydrogen peroxide 3% gallon first, and yeah you're out west in grunge land! Wondering if a hard prune is in order.

Personally, I wouldn’t prune as a reaction to the mildew, but if you were planning to make some saw cuts to style, now might be a great to do it.

didn't realize it was planted in the ground. definitely relocate it next spring but don't add insult to injury this year. Just leave it be. til 2025 (location wise). I can't recommend any treatments because I just move my mildewy stuff and it gets better, I've been in your position before though.

Going to start with the hydrogen peroxide tonight or tomorrow when it shows up and go from there. Tha ks again!

Hey all, did the hydrogen peroxide soak today and cut it way back since quite a nu.ber of leaves had been affected already. What I noticed was likely my big fail outside of location was that there was tons of dead and suffocated foliage under the new growth this year, which likely led to the start of poor circulation. It's a good learning thing for me with maples, definitely keep them breathing.

I have two more green acres in my main front garden that are dense but not showing signs. Should I avoid trimming them in this part of season with not all growth hardened off, or do it as a precautionary and spray them as well? They are definitely main elements of my front garden I'd hate to lose them or have them looking sickly.

They're on both ends for reference. The mildew one is shadowed put to the left of the front green door. 20240428_132422.jpg

Wanted to thank you all for the advice on the hydrogen peroxide. Maples seem to have responded really well. There was basically zero air flow internally and lots of dead leaves as a result. Cleaning that out helped, along with the other green maples 🍁 👍

Photo is dark and yellow leaves are from porch light, but no leaves have fallen off or wilted as a result, so hopefully good news. Happy weekend.
