A bonsai buddy and I were discussing trees that could be chopped and rooted on a board with or without hormone, (Like a large cutting) the ones I know for a fact that can be done this way are:
Olive, bougies, crape myrtles,ficus, wisteria, wild grape, bald cypress, willows.....Are there others that can be done this way?

You can do it with Schefflera pardon my spelling.. Have you noticed with ficus it seems bigger cuttings take easier than smaller cuttings? Or is that just a fluke with me?

Ummm a saw across the base...Clean up the saw cuts till they are smooth, sprinkle on some Hormex, Guy wire the tree into whatever pot you are planting it in. Fill with your Mix...Keep moist.

My question was more for the specific details about the type of cutting, how large, how long it may take to root and season when the procedure is undertaken rather than how to cut it.

Hmm generaly a season or two to root, I have seen some done that had a base over a foot wide.
Early spring when it has new growth.

Hi Irene

I have read that Chinese Maple and Pomegranate should root well as large cuttings. I recently dug a fairly large maple and lost all of the root ball (so basically a big cutting...) and it seems to be growing!

In ground trees in general are better for a more drastic rooting endeavor as they accumulate more vigor then rooting attempts originating from potted specimens.

Coast redwoods will root from a flat cut.
