I have been scoping this out since last summer, and finally got the opportunity. This amur maple has a 4 inch base and sits 22 inches tall. It was in a local park and I think it was massively damaged and pruned, but not sure in which order. The deadwood scar definitely adds character. Not sure, but the tree may be about 30 years old. This is my biggest tree and looking forward to the transition into a pot. I think this tree is ready for branch work straight away

It was in a local park
Did you get a permit or other permission from the appropriate park authority to collect this tree? It harms public perception of the hobby when people collect trees without going through the proper channels and can make it harder for others to collect in the future because the officials in charge of managing these natural resources may get a negative impression of bonsai people as lacking respect for their conservation authority. Later on, when someone comes along, follows protocol, and asks nicely they get told, “No, we don’t allow that,” because the park ranger remembers the time when someone took a tree in the middle of the night and left a big open hole in the ground that the city had to send a crew out to fill in, etc. Basically, don’t be that guy. There can also be legal issues if you’re caught collecting without permission.

I am aware of the legality behind theft and property damage. I sought out city park management last fall and got the ok. They are trying to reduce the number of Acer Ginnala in the city and were going to get rid of it!!!

Lol I didn't finish dumping in my media yet when the pic was taken . It's basically a tote but the bottom has holes.

Nice find good luck . I heard there illegal in some states as a invasive species . There heavily planted here down town Ottawa in planters I’m starting some from seed this year from a extra red fall colour one . I was looking at the food tote myself in grocery store . Like you say holes in bottom carry straps strong plastic and cheaper than as sturdy a pot 9.95 $ to. Bad they are so deep Looks like your tree has been trimmed back multiple times should bud like crazy from those knobs 👍👍

Minnesota DNR lists them as invasive and are no longer allowed to be planted. The tote was way big. My wife saves cardboard juice / milk boxes to make candles, so I used some of those to eat up some space on the side. Told my wife I would get rid of a few other trees since I got this 😆

Normally I plant a collected tree in wood box custom made to be no larger than it had to but thinking of the totes cut down long and flat for trees in development after all plastic don’t rot

I get wife's junk tote, drill whatever holes I want. We want wide and shallow right. I don't cut them down all the time. Keeps the rabbits and whatnot away from my stuff

During bud break,I carved out some of the deadwood out of the side, got back to live cambium fairly easy. Most of the bad spots were on this side here, going down a ways. Plenty of healthy branches to repair

Considering there cold hardiness . And there habit of being very tough . They may have fairly rot resistant wood . I have no resource to prove this just a thought . I’m starting to find them interesting . So far my attempt to grow them from seed is failing . Which has made me wonder . There planted heavily in downtown Ottawa in large planters outside office buildings and in parks around town they seed heavily but you don’t see any seedlings 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ My first attempt is with seed cold strat on the trees and licked late winter

I noticed the city planted ones, the seeds don't like to germinate in the concrete jungles, parking lots, sidewalks. I germinated loads again this year from the same tree 🙃

l talking Amur for the seeds like I said my first attempt was last years seeds collected late this winter on a tree . I have not tried fresh seed . My observation about the lack of seedlings was in parks gardens etc . What’s your seed prep most info states warm and cold strat Please share your success plan
