Here it is one of my little mugos, which I think has some potential. The tree is just about 25 cm, but has some nice movement and pleasant bark and (partially) radial roots.

The tree will be fully wired in autumn. The question now is about letting the tree grow in a colander for a few more years or start reducing the container progressively. The trunk is thin but has some character and might work well with it’s current shape, so not sure about what to do.

As you see in the images the trunk line is very sinusoidal and the are are good an radial but mainly in 3/4 of the trunk and not all directions.

Thoughts and feedback will be appreciated,
Thanks,
Julio

I'd cut that pot down by half eventually. Like, just cut the bottom half off entirely and give it a new bottom.

That pot seems a good width.

Nice.

I have not worked with collanders before, for something like zone 8a, would you protect it in winter?

Collanders? Do you want to add plastic waste to environment?

Sure, I can’t agree more with you.

I acquired this pine a few months ago and as the repotting season was well over it stayed in the collander where it came, that is why I ask advice about overwintering mugo pines in a collander.

Update: the tree was repoted in late winter, around 2 months ago, it has reacted very well, pushing a lot of new candles everywhere.

Pot by Rolf Hitz, Switzerland.

I mean in general for Mugo pine. They are very cold hardy. They were my first transplants of the new year, I repotted a dozen of themin February and all are doing very well.
