Mirai in HBO documentary

Thought this was an interesting, yet choppy, documentary about trees with bonsai included.

Most interesting as we volunteer with the staff and work on the trees stolen shown in the video. Also we have acquaintance with the Weyerhaeuser family. Also helped prep the WWII bonsai exhibition centerpiece dead Eastern Cedar tree shown. So those segments had a lot of value and meaning for us.

Also interesting to us were the segments in the White mtns and with the Joshua tree, having been in the high alpine and Joshua NP many times.

As far as the Ryan segments. imho the security footage should have never been aired. That was over the top. Not saying the result of vandalism shouldn’t have been shown… the clip of someone obviously in metal distress and out of control was not needed a violation and only distracted from whatever message the film attempted to convey. (That fact the person shown is a USMC vet only made it worse for me as a 21 yr vet myself)

My better half and I have each been married over 40 years cumulative. We know assigning blame in a partnership is never simple in a complex relationship between two different people. Especially in a relationship where both work in the same business.

Blending immersive work, especially a start up… which we also did …together with personal family issues is frankly an explosive mixture. So not going to judge nor speculate. Not my place.

Sadly we have long term personal experience with mental illness in our and close friend‘s families too. It has taken years to come to the understanding that it’s impossible for a stable person to rationalize the behavior of a mentally ill person when that person is out of control. So, again, not going to judge, nor speculate. Not my place.

Overall, the documentary was artistic at points, blending multiple threads throughout. Yet for us, this constant weaving of many different threads back and forth only served to dilute the message of human entanglement with trees.

Thankfully this film avoided the error many documentaries make by flaunting presentistic judgements on past events in history. That was a relief. Yet it’s inclusion of over the top content saddened both of us.

Would we watch it again? We will not.
