Need Air-layering advice for Metasequoia

Has anyone got some good advice for air-layering metasequoia? I want to try and air layer the hardwood not softwood cuttings as I keep finding online. How long do they usually take to root and when do you usually start the process, March here is still freezing at -5 to 5 Celsius. Any advice would be appreciated.

New York Couple: several hours of un and re-wiring. Its clear that it needs tilting in this springs transplant. The deadwood trunk looks funny in pic--perhaps it should be shortened. Need to make the perfect slab for this one.
