Hi All,
Just moved from Orlando, Florida out to LA. I managed to bring out a number of shonin sized trees of a variety of species. Looking for any local tips and suggestions for the new climate. Any good local info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sean

LA or LA?

LA, as in Los Angeles? Or LA, as in Louisiana?

that really is so confusing.......although When you say "new climate", I think you meant the city of angels....

Yeah, I would assume he meant LA as in Los Angeles. What's to know about the climate here? It's hot, dry, and windy. What kind of trees are we talking about? It obviously rains a lot more in Florida than it does in Southern California. (Although we did get a nice shower today. It's a rare treat when it does happen.) You may find yourself watering a bit more in the summer months. Our tap water is very hard, and will leave spotting on foliage, and sediment build-up on your trees. It's harmless, but it is an eyesore. The only trees I seem to have issues with are maples. The sun browns their leaves in the summer. It doesn't kill the trees, but it does make them look a bit scraggly. I guess a shade cloth wouldn't hurt either.

If the move is to LA, CA...how did you get the trees through? I heard/read bringing trees in CA is a pain.

Los Angeles

Sorry, city not the state, probably Santa Monica region.
I have schefflera, trident maple, acacia, bouganvillia, chinese elm, willow leaf ficus, bahama cherry, ilex, button wood as well as others.
Had to bareroot the lot of it and am in temporary planting until my pots arrive in another few months.
Good to know about the water hardness, thanks

Think clandestine subterfuge...they can't check every box and piece of luggage.

Welcome to SoCal!
Santa Monica weather should be awesome. Not too hot, not to cold but definitely cooler then Florida I would assume. And not as nice as San Diego but not as hot or dry as the IE. There are a ton of clubs out here and there should be some near you that should be able to give u better local info for your bonsai.

I'd like to say that I helped him pack, but really I just drank some belgian ale and watched while he bare-rooted his trees and prepared for the journey to Valinor.

I did inherit some great stuff that he elected not to take. I've been meaning to make a thread and will once I take some decent pictures.

Isn't that what friends do when they help you move? Drink your beer and stand around and watch you do all the work and ask," your not going to take that with you are you?":p LOL!!

It was actually kind of sad. My good friend and basically only local bonsai buddy just moved 3,000 miles away. At least now I have a good reason to head to California again and check out the awesome nurseries and gardens that they have out there.

You shouldn't have any problems with those trees in Santa Monica or anywhere in the area- the buttonwood will need some protection in the winter though. Water in SM is a bit better then other areas in L.A..
Let me know if you have any questions or need to know where the clubs, nurseries etc. are.

They do check some vehicles, just not often.
