Nova bonsai garden

It looks like Scott is thinking this move through and has a good plan... Building multiple levels and having everything securely attached to the truck as one cohesive unit doubles storage capacity and prevents shifting of cargo. I didn't bother attaching my larger trees to the truck floor but simply packed them in tightly while using spare towels/comforters/sheets/blankets/spareclothing/tarps in between pots to prevent shifting/rubbing and subsequent damage to puts/trees. It worked like a charm with my trees. In fact, the only damage occurred to one of my collected junipers after the trees had been moved off the truck and placed on my patio... I learned the hard way that being severely sleep deprived and moving large trees with 100+ year old dead wood is a bad combination. I do believe that Scott's bigger trees are bigger/taller/heavier than mine, so I'm sure he needs to approach their safe move differently. The only other thing I'll mention here is that the whole packing/shelfbuildinginthetruck/fixingtreestotheshelves will probably take twice as long as you've initially planned, particularly if you're moving big trees in nice pots and you're doing it by yourself. Good luck!!

Doing it alone was my only concern also! I have no doubt the engineering of the move will be insanely secure, but I really hope you are able to get a hand with the loading, unloading and building of the storage shelves Scott! Best of luck!

Since the graduations are in the bag, my attention turns to three things. 1) packing. 2) closing on the house in Houston (that’s tomorrow). 3) transporting the bonsai collection to Virginia.

Let’s talk about 3.

I have a plan - I’ve rented a 26’ truck to transport the trees. My plan is to lay down a bed of pallets in the back. I’ll screw the pallets together and strap them down to the bed with tie-downs. I’ll place the larger trees on the pallets and secure them to the pallet boards. Next, I’ll put my benches on top of the pallets and screw them to the pallet boards as well. On top of the benches, I’ll put sheets of 3/4” plywood and screw that down to the bench tops. On top of the plywood, I’ll put my smaller trees - I’ll drill holes through the plywood to secure them for transportation.

I have a few taller trees in shallow pots. I’ve tied them down with guy wires. I’ll probably secure the root ball with packing film as well before packing Them in.

What do you think of my plan? I’ve never transported a collection like this - any suggestions?

Scott
I have visions of the aches and pains caused by twisting and turning at all levels. The good news is, I think the trees will be fine. What is your preference for linament.?
Safe travels, enjoy the journey.

I have an 18 year old who’s looking for a summer job, 😂

Oh been there done that. Any chance he might be looking for a paid summer job.😉 When you reach your destination buy him a lawn mower in return for his help and let him use the pick up. Entrepreneur in the making. Fresh air, sunshine lots of exercise, gets to travel and meet new people. Perfect.

At the end of a long hard day. I could not have done it alone - my son worked his tail off. Everything is tightly secured. The pallet system worked great making a very stable system to tie the trees to. Glad that many of my benches were used as support - I’ll have something to put the trees on at the rental. Next step at the barn is the watering system. Once that’s in, I can start shuttling my trees to their permanent home. 7777CBBB-FE81-4262-BFFC-BE328B01818E.jpeg46A73C27-2EE3-4838-9C8D-731541736806.jpeg

Looks like you've done all you could to secure those trees! Best wishes for an uneventful trip. Very exciting. I hope to be doing something similar in a few years, except heading in the opposite direction!

When my truck broke down a couple of weeks ago, I left it at the dealership in Chattanooga for repair. Stranded one too many times in it, so when they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, I couldn’t refuse. I’m here today completing the sale - then on to Virginia. Tomorrow we’ll unload. 4B812C00-AE09-4F15-9BF6-B972B738786D.jpeg
