About 5 years ago my wife surprised me with this chinese elm on my birthday. Elms are one of my favorite trees for bonsai. Mainly because they are not too fussy, they grow well in my zone, and they can be induced to produced very small leaves. Last winter I decided to pull the branches down. You can see in the second pic how the leaves have reduced in size. Here are the before and after pics.

Thanks Bob. It reminds me of an octopus. I can remove some of those lower front branches (tenticals) that could make a difference. Glad to see your from Iowa. My wife got the elm from DaSue.

What a remarkable improvement! I've known Dave for years; DaSu is where my first trees came from...he definitely has some unusual concepts of styling...that elm was no exception. Glad to see the transformation. BTW, Dave's true gift is his pottery!
