Were not supposed to pinch junipers.. what about hinoki? Is it okay to pinch hinoki tips or should you always go in with scissors and just thin areas? I have been pinching mine for the last year and it has really filled out quite nicley. And not just ONLY on the ends. I even got two new primary branches growing on the trunk. I dont overly pinch it though. I still leave a lot of growing tips! Just wondering if you should never pinch them like junipers or if they respond better to it. Thanks

You need to pinch them to keep them from just growing foliage on the ends of the branches. Not all growing tips at once just like you are doing.

Last 2 winters, Mother nature pinched mine for me. Still trying to recovee

I get after mine with the scissors, kinda against most of what I've read. Works on my hinoki

Ok I see.. so they actually resopondbetter to pinching than junipers do. I mean I think if you do it right, or in a more refined state pinching helps junipers to ramify and backbud. Most of the time though, long term pinching will only result in back budding and ramification at the ends of branches. Ive noticed that pinching back my hinoki has caused it to pop buds lower on the branch and trunk. but also at the ends of the branches. Its crazy to me to see hinoki from Japan that are super ramified. Idk if ill ever understand how they train this type of foliage like that. Lol

Ouch.. Ive lost like 4 trees this summer.. and two from winter. Thank goodness they weren't really expensive or anything but still, they had a lot of potential and it sucks losing trees that you know you can eventually make into something nice, down the road. This is my 3rd summer doing bonsai so ive got a lot to learn and im still out here killing trees.. glad yours are recovering. Misting and partial shade. Mine is still in a five gallon nursery container, root bound in regular potting soil and sand. I cant wait to repot it next year into some good soil and bare root 1/3 of it. Ill probably take off about a 1/3 of the roots, also.
