Pixie bougainvillea

I have a couple. The leaves are smaller, that's about the only difference, hence the "pixie". I repotted mine on Sunday before we left for vacation and was pretty excited about the amount of growth they put on in less than a week. Bless my son for watering!

nice @Carol 83 glad it did well with your sons care

I repot the healthy roots down to about 3" diameter w 3 tap roots flat and into 6" trainer. Other I have is is 9" trainer and almost an inch thick now, non pixie. Trying to get some cuttings going...which I might have done w 3

Pixie is a dwarf, smaller leaves and tight clusters of flowers......no huge, adventurous canes of growth. These are used often, along with Pixie Queen, in the Palm Springs area. Typically they are about 3' in the landscape, though I have seen some older specimens that can reach about 6'. Compare to regular bougainvillea that can easily scramble up trees to 20-25'

good to know! thanks

Nice, @hinmo24t!

A couple of comments. First, in your location I would expect this to remain the same size (i.e., thickness) for...well, pretty much forever. But something you might try that I have had some success with is allow growth to extend several inches out, then prune back hard, rinse and repeat. Seems like the only way I have gotten mine to thicken up perceptibly at all. Second, the soil you have this in looks pretty moisture retentive. These do not like to stay wet, so I suggest you keep a close eye on the soil moisture this year, then maybe next summer repot it into a drier mix that you can water every day. I have gotten better growth since I started doing that.

i have a regular bougie that was about half an inch thick when i got it, managed to double it in thickness in a year. that one i grew in nursery container for a year before hardcut and rootwork. its getting some decent taper now ive been noticing. was fun to overwinter that in my kitchen last year (not)

the Pixie i worked on immediately, so not expecting it to be a crazy trunk anytime soon and look forward to the journey with it

as for the soil, it isnt in my typical bonsai soil (30% each of oildry, perlite, compost) that my other boug is in,
this one is in MG cactus/succulent and extra perlite, and mosquito bits. i use this mix as my backup regularly for a lot of my plants.
adding sand into it or extra perlite

old shot of other bougainvillea...everything in this photo has been repot/bonsai now, except the ERC i composted

hope so! how are your purple ones? didnt you get them this season?
I got one purple and one red. I repotted them both and they are starting to show a little color. It's interesting how much smaller the leaves on the purple one are compared to the red one.
