Porcelain Berry from coh

Here’s the porcelain berry pic as requested from @coh . I collected it from his yard during the 2016 National Show. It had 9 or so trunks, and I had no experience collecting big ones eating a whole fence. Spring of 2017 some sort of borer annihilated most of the trunks and started the wood melting process.

To be honest, I sort of just let it ride until today seeing what would happen. Ripped off a bunch of stuff to see what hasn’t rotted yet today. Base appears to be “preservable”, so I’ll give it a shot for a few years. It’s about the size of a basketball.

I got one of these this spring, along with the admonishion to keep the birds away from the berries so they don’t spread. What I’ve learned so far is that you can get excellent leaf reduction by underpotting them.

It lives! Good to see. Certainly looks a lot different than last time I saw it.

I think I mentioned at the National show that the fence is covered again with the offspring of this beast. I'm seeing them popping up in other places as well. There's no going back now!

@coh your porcelain berry has found a new home, and is almost fully melted down to a few small “trunks / veins”. Sold it for a song to a 15 yr old bonsai hobbyist that shows real potential. Doesn’t hurt that his dad collects.....

It’s about to jump off in Nashville bonsai-wise. Björn is getting settled in, there are small and large bonsai operations in the region that have long histories, and lots of new blood both as vendors and practitioners. Bonsai Hub of the South soon .
