What size pot does one use after separating an air? Is the concept like a yamadori collection, that the pot should be just the size of the roots? which would mean a very small pot relative to the canopy of the tree, and than up-pot come spring?

I try to use as small of pot as possible taking into account the weight and footprint needed to stabilize the height of the canopy.

Not sure there is an approved legal size limit for air layer pots. Obviously depends on the size of the layer though.
Just go with your gut. It needs to be large enough for the pot to be stable but not so huge the roots cannot fill it this year.
