Is the following good for maples? Seems no bark in it:

Pumice,Turface & Lava

You could grow a tree in pure gravel if you water and fertilize it enough, but yes, your mix will do. You just need to adjust it to fit your needs and (water giving) possibilities to make it work for you.

As a fellow PA resident the only thing I would put in that mix would be pine trees. That sounds really dry to me. I guess if the particles are small enough, it could hold water okay, but my yard gets really hot and that is a dry mix. Also if you're retired and love watering it's probably ideal but you'll have to watch that closesly assuming your pots aren't big nursery cans for growing stuff out.

granule size affect water holding (Smaller is more)
Adding organics (pine bark, coco fibre) can increase water holding capacity

In moist climates it can work. In dry climates you will be watering 3 times a day, probably.

Be very careful with turface. Small, flat piece size holds too much water and causes problems in short order. Maybe if you are working with really small trees the small piece size would work for you.

Yes. Particle size is important.
I don’t use Turface, but I do use calcined clay in my mix. Oil dri premium and Napa DE replace the akadama in a APL mix alternative.

Where can u buy bark that has mostly proper size? Is orchid bark ok, or should I stick to pine?
