I made a massive root reduction on a 6-8 year old red Japanese maple (species unknown but likely Bloodgood) this spring before buds popped. It has leafed out nicely, but unsurprisingly about 30% branch tips did not bud/leaf. In my opinion, there are more adventitious bud locations than usual in crotches and very low on branches. My question is what to do with the branch tips that did not bud out this year. Should I prune them (if so, when), or leave them alone?

Thanks!

Not entirely unexpected as you mentioned.

Might want to leave them alone until late June. Then cut back to green growth or a desired location, leaving a 1/4 -3/8” stub to ensure proper compartmentation of the wounds..

Btw It really helps us if folks include images along with write ups so we can see the issue.

Cheers
