Visualize your design now and chop IF needed. The sooner you do the faster you will get to your goal...and properly too. They backbud well and responds to pruning and pinching well.

It is amazing how they grow esp after getting fertilized as you noted. I have to rub maybe more than a hundred suckers now on my newly collected pyracantha. Yes that means my newly collected (March 16, 2014) tree was fertilized several times already and I have been wiring, pruning, and pinching it...already.

I wouldn't be so quick to chop. I know how slow large wounds heal on pyracantha, so you aren't really gaining any time, and are actually risking damaging a very new root system.

Yes, they grow hard, and when I collected 3 in '05, they all pushed growth, but then after 4-6 months, 2 withered and died. The buds you're rubbing out are probably not the result of roots forming, but would actually help roots to form. Pyracantha roots slowly, and very slowly from the large cuts...they callus over but take a few years to be coaxed further.

Good info Brian. I got this from an air layer so it's rooted up very well. But, I'm not that unhappy with the chop structure and I just want it to get stronger this yr. So hands off this yr.(damn I'm getting more patient by the day lol)
