Could shari over time change the growth direction of my tree? Lets say I decide to carve a line in a 45 degree angle on the side of my trunk will that change its growth direction?

No. Trees grow from the ends of branches.

I have to disagree on this claim. I heard this before but my observation tells me otherwise. I did cut off all the grow tips on my bougie but the darn thing keep on growing. Not this the tips, the whole branch.

JKL is correct as far as the length of the branch is concerned... but a growing branch can add mass through both growth at the tips (apical meristem) and thickening of the branch through the cambium.

Thanks for all the responses...
I'm just trying to get a better understanding of how this works before I start attacking any trees... So after the shari is made the cambium slowly swells around the wound now when the trunk gets bigger will it cause the tree to lean more to one side? or will it just continue to grow as is?

Your statement is correct, with the exception that creating a Shari really won't make the trunk lean more. Other techniques will be more effective. Are you trying to do something specific to a certain tree? A photo or two may help us recommend a technique to get the result you're after.

Also keep in mind that large shari's on trunks essentailly kill everything below them. While the trunk continues to grow around it, the trunk there will whither back and create a sunken portion. Also roots below this area with out branching above will also die, causing one to have a hole in the trunk base and flare on what could be the front of the tree. Doing major shari on a young tree without the mass and flare to look good will never develop below a shari.

there you go.

for example this picture i dont think the tree was grown this way then carved

Too bad....someone ruined a really great tree.

The Shari does seem out of place on this tree, probally a large scar at one time

it could be fixed by removing most of that weight and getting creative with the hollowing ... with a hollow it has the potential to be a great tree again ...

tho as Al said ... if they just did it "because" .... they ruined a great tree

thank you stacy for you input do you think the curvature of the trunk was caused by constant scarring or is there a cut or something im not seeing... or what would you suggest to get that much movement out of a telephone pole
