Collected this American Beech this morning. Was growing on hillside , as the roots were inspected , there were rocks below it causing a lot of fine feeder roots like ground layer does…to grow close to the trunk. No large downward tap root. Planted in pumice and pine bark. It’s planted deep because the twist of the trunk. It’s a big one , so for leaf reduction American beech is difficult but can be dampened by larger size tree. Tried to show the front but goal is to just let it recover and get more budding down the line.

Nice dig, looks like you got a ton of roots like you mentioned!

Are you going to grow it out to be taller, or are you planning to chop at some point?

Thanks , not sure wantvthe ability to thread graft down low if no buds pop. Definitely keep it taller though to accentuate that curve.

What a beauty! Glad it is starting to push; it's always 'cross your fingers time' after collecting, isn't it?

It is , not completely out of that timeframe yet, once leaves harden off early summer then I’ll know for sure how well it went. But thank, this one was growing in between shelves of rock , so the roots layered themselves over the rock which made for lots of fine roots when it was collected, and plenty of native soil

You got some good movement in that trunk! Nice find! A good twisty beech is usually hard to come by.
