Some bonsai folks have guns

No murder in France? Bullshit, brother. Love you, but just a paragraph of nonsense.
Never fired a gun in my life and don't plan to anytime soon. But the day I can't buy a gun, will be the day before the Apocalypse. Bank on it.
Lynyrd Skynyrd had it right, but so what. Personally, hucking a rock is SO much more rewarding!;):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
How is the guillotine not a part of your culture? Selective memory?

Love and light my friend!:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

So well said, and spot on.

Thx indeed. I thought this thread had gone where it should. To bed. There are some fundamental differences between europe and USA, and one of them is on gun ownership. We can stop discussing the topic, as we will never see eye toeye.

Fifi.....one of only two B-29's still operable......even the just and honorable may not be spared man's greatest sin....Book of Lance chapter two.

Hi folks,

I know that most of us here share the same values, but also that we have a different history, and different ways of giving them reality in the real world.

For instance, "The Three Musketeers" was about a group of friends who first met by having a showdown, at a time when duels had been forgotten because the French nobility was killing each other (see: rappers in Florida).

A bit like when emperor Meiji abolished the right of samurai to bear arms.

I won't judge you, but think: if, out of fear, you had shot a neighbour, or even a friend, or someone you've never met before but looked "suspect" (like someone freaking out for the same reason as you), how would you feel?

I know it's fun to shoot at a target: when I was a kid, my father had a 22 long rifle that we used on a taget in the attics. When we moved away, we had to change the door, and fortunately, no one ever came upstairs saying "Hi guys, I've come to tell you -BANG !"

But as I said, we don't live in the same place, and don't have the same culture. Here only the cops and in some places gangs have weapons. Fortunately there are much more law-abiding citizens that don't have guns than hoodlums and the police don't shoot 100 bullets in a "suspect" climbing his grandmother's fence to bing her cookies.

I understand from your user name that you're a woman, and as a woman, you're even more prone to be the prey of predators, and so you want to feel safe, so I'm not lecturing you.

But I much better prefer to live in a society where guns are outlawed. For, at least from I can see, or read from statistics, it's much safer to live in a place where people have grown up from playing cowboys and indians with bb guns, and I think that owning guns is not a sign of civilization.

I've met people who have been mugged, beaten up, and even raped. none of them ever thought of buying a gun, and I know how the trauma lasts a long time.

To conclude this ranting:

If you had had a gun, are you sure you would have been the one to "win".

When someone dies, there's no victor (though an atheist, I'm still infused with the values of the new testament I guess...)

Go forward, coffeegirl, don't let bad people spoil this wonderful world, nothing is worse than letting people define you, or lead you to consider yourself as a victim, never give up.

Don't lose (all) your innocence....

Just could not keep proboscis out of American discussion could you. We value AND defend freedom and Liberty.

I knew I shouldn't have posted in this thread, our points of view seem really irreconciliable :)

How is the guillotine not a part of your culture? Selective memory?

FYI, the death penalty was abolished in 1981 in France, and has been suppressed since in all member states of the EU. No rise in murders or other criminal offences.

"...an American is as likely to be killed by a gun as a Frenchman is likely to die of hypothermia."

But of course, depending on the way you interpret statistics, they can become the truth, or just fake news... :p

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was designated as a National Monument in 1924. Employees of the National Park Service have been caring for the colossal copper statue since 1933.

@AlainK - So you're saying you want it back, or?

:D:D:D That's not the point. :)

Wasn't france one of the last to do this? The Netherlands got rid of it more than a century before, in 1870.

Not really, it was officially banned one year after France, in 1982... but the last execution in this country dates back to 1860:

"Last execution for peacetime offences 1860. Abolished for peacetime offences in 1870. Abolished in Netherlands by Constitution 1982. Last Netherlands overseas territory to abolish was Netherlands Antilles in 2010"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_by_country#Europe_2

This being said, it amounts to almost the same. Have a good day, and goodbye... ;)

I have guns if anyone really cares,?--- what's more, I know how to use them.

LOL! I could arm most of my neighbors. Of course, so could many of my neighbors. If there is ever civil unrest, you can bet that it won’t affect this area, where uplit USMC, Gadsden, and American flags are a common sight. All of our gun are well-behaved, too.

Some of you people are so disarmingly funny :D:D:D

It's hard to understand how people who obviously feel besieged by <anything> really feel, with this paranoia, this fear deep inside.

It was 33° C today. The door is never locked and all the windows are open to let the fresh air come in (20°).

Good night everyone.

How many times has your house been broken into and ransacked???

How many times have your vehicles been stolen from in front of your home???

How many times have you been mugged on the street, in your own neighborhood???

How many times have the police stopped you in your car, in your own neighborhood, to see why your white ass is around here???

Just curious....

@AlainK

I ask you these questions as one who has experienced all this and more, more than a few times each, in my life...

You think being able to defend yourself is foolish.....
How can we do anything but laugh at you?

Oh, this reminds me of a tale from a fellow worker in Austin, TX. He lived on a busy street corner in a 'bad' area of town. He had a dog and kept a 45 in his night stand. One night his dog acted like someone was in his house. He got his trusty 45 from the night stand and proceeded to assess the situation, going from room to room. Of course it was in the dark as turning on the lights or carrying a flashlight would show the intruder exactly where he was and would make himself an easy target. He continued his inspection, not finding anything unusual until he arrived at the door to his kitchen. Crouched down in front of his refrigerator he could clearly see the perp. His dog started barking wildly, so he shot the perp several times and threw on the lights.

Then he remembered that he had left his vacuum cleaner in front of the refrigerator earlier that day. He had to buy a new refrigerator on the next day. He got a good deal on a new vacuum cleaner from that same appliance dealer.

I have no idea why he would have told such a story about himself (true of fabricated), but it always comes to mind when I make the mistake of descending into this stuff. A gun will not stop your car from being stolen - they will be gone before you can shoot them. It won't stop you from being mugged - likely it will just get you killed when you try to be Mr. Fastdraw. White guys don't get stopped and asked why your white ass is around here. If it did happen and you pulled a gun, you would be in a world of shit. If you carry a gun just so you won't have to use it, you don't need it because you won't use it. If you use it, you've got lots and lots of legal trouble, even if you feel wonderful about what a 'hero' you are.

Life is tough.
Its tougher if you are stupid.

except the data doesnt support that. even the cdc discovered that defensive gun use is way more common than the public thinks or hears - and in the vast majority of cases - defense is successful without a single shot fired.

and there should really only be one reason for lots and lots of legal trouble and that is when the shot was not justified. unfortunately, zealous DAs and liberal policies can still make it very costly and risky to defend yourself in court. that is why stand your ground laws are so important. if it was NOT a justified instance of self defense, you will still be punished accordingly (or not depending on how much legal rep you can afford) and if it was a justified shooting, you have the law protecting you .

You think being able to defend yourself is foolish.....
How can we do anything but laugh at you?
Just trying to understand here, not from a position to create an argument, but would you agree to the thought that you feeling the need to be able to defend yourself, is a display of a failed police force?
