Greetings,

For those of us living in the impending snow and ice blizzard this weekend, how are you guys prepping your trees? Mine are currently on the ground, underneath a house, some are mulched in. I’ll probably throw some more pine nuggets tomorrow. Will this be enough?

Our temps are dropping precipitously on Friday night. Friday ill be moving all trees to the ground. Some specific ones Ill probably put under cover until Sunday morning. Im planning on letting everything get covered in the expect 10"-15" of snow.

Most of mine are in the greenhouse which I keep heated at 34-36 degrees F. After hurricane Helene we had a whole house generator installed so this will be the first time we may find out if it really works and hopefully it will keep the heater in the greenhouse going. If necessary I can haul a few sensitive trees into the garage. As long as the natural gas keeps flowing we should be OK. I think the low we’re expecting will be 8 on Tuesday morning and again on Thursday morning.

I will put mine on the ground. Some are up against the foundation. The two big grow boxes will stay where they are because they are too heavy to move.

Leaving mine mulched on the ground. Praying we get enough snow to cover the mulch up onto a lot of the trees themselves. Snow will insulate from the bitter cold following the snow.

I have mine munched in along house have frames up so if need to can throw some frost cloth or poly over them. Also planning on burying them under snow. Going to water them thoroughly since first day above freezing today in over a week. Highs here this weekend expected to be 15° lows in the single digits 2 nights 0° all next week looking similar

Panic built a cold frame that I can deconstruct and reuse next year. My collection is too big to fit into my small townhouse, so I'm planning on leaving the top open during the snow, and piling as much in as I can, then covering the top before the ice and sleet comes. The temperatures are low enough that it'll probably stay pretty insulated for quite a while that way 🤷 This is for sure the coldest I've ever dealt with since starting bonsai

I'm way farther north but when I put my trees on the ground I pile mulch all around them from ground up to trunks in a big pile several inches larger then the group of trees I have huddled together. I use several big bags of mulch

The last hefty snow we had in 2015. There are eight or nine trees in the photo but only a few are visible. The cinder blocks are four block high to give some perspective. Many trees are completely covered which protects them from the worst cold. I’m hoping for much the same this time around

Would be better if the trees pots were down in the mulch not sitting on top. Not to be a bummer but That boxwood look a little iffy to begin with. I’d bury those pots as deeply as possible into the mulch and let snow cover them. Ice is heavier so you wil have to monitor the load a bit. All snow is not a problem. Fwiw I’ve had two feet of snow cover maple trunks and bend them double. They readjusted after the snow melted.

Also if you have to clear snow off the trees be extremely cautious and take it slow. You can do a lot of damage (perhpaps more than would result from simple snow load) trying to get it off the trees
